A YOUNG mum who stole three bottles of washing detergent from a South Tyneside store admitted the charge in court – while holding her two-year-old daughter in her arms.

Mandy Bain, 29, had no one with her at court to watch her child so she carried her with her to the dock as she pleaded guilty to a charge of shop theft from the Co-op store in Dean Road, South Shields. Keith Laidlaw, prosecuting, said: “On May 6, Bain entered the store and selected three bottles of Bold detergent and put them in a bag. She was seen on store CCTV and arrested.

“She said she had given them to a friend who had asked her to steal them for her.”

Christopher Brown, defending, said: “She has no previous matters recorded against her. She is deeply embarrassed to be in this situation.

“At the time her brother was in a relationship with a woman with a history of shoplifting. She had influence on Mandy and used her to go in the shop and steal the items.”

Bain, of Shaw Avenue, South Shields, was handed a six-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay compensation of £15.75 to the store as well as a £15 victim surcharge.
