Murder trial of Manchester Arena bomber's brother set to open at Old Bailey

The trial of the younger brother of the Manchester Arena bomber is due to open on Tuesday, February 4.

Salman Abedi, 22, detonated an explosive device as fans left an Ariana Grande concert, killing 22 people and injuring more on May 22 2017.

Five people from the North East were killed.

They were; Chloe Rutherford, 17, and Liam Curry, 19, from South Shields; Hartlepool-born Jane Tweddle, 51; and Philip Tron, 32, and his partner’s daughter Courtney Boyle, 19, from Gateshead.

Salman’s brother Hashem Abedi, now 22, was allegedly involved in planning the suicide attack.

He denies 22 counts of murder, attempted murder and conspiring with his brother to cause explosions.

A jury was sworn in at the Old Bailey to try the case on Monday, February 3.

Senior prosecutor Duncan Penny QC is expected to outline the case on Tuesday morning.

The trial is expected to go on for up to eight weeks.
