North East schools put into lockdown after teenager is arrested over boy's stabbing

A teenager has been arrested over a schoolboy stabbing which led two North East schools to go into lockdown.

Parents were advised security at West Park Academy primary in Darlington was being tightened following the incident on a housing estate today, Monday, June 21.

Durham Constabulary confirmed a 15-year-old boy had been arrested, while councillors reported the air ambulance had attended the scene.

A force spokesperson said: “Police were alerted to reports of a serious assault on Collingsway, in Darlington, at approximately 12.45pm, this afternoon.

“Colleagues from the ambulance service reported a stabbing incident and officers attended the scene.

“The victim, a male in his mid-teens, was taken to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, suffering from stab wounds.

“A 15-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with this incident and is currently helping police with their inquires.

“It is believed the suspect and victim are known to each other.”

West Park Academy on Facebook said it was responding to the “serious ongoing incident” and said: “We are currently in lockdown and all children are safe.

"We will not allow any children to leave the school without an adult (not an older sibling).

“Please pick up as normal with an adult. Top gate is locked.”

Children at Wyvern Academy secondary were also kept under tight security.

The councillors for Brinkburn and Faverdale Facebook page said: “There is currently a serious ongoing incident within our ward in the West Park area with police and air ambulance in attendance.

“Due to this incident, Wyvern School is on lockdown and children need to be collected from school.

“Please be aware of necessary police activity and stay safe.”
