Police warning to revellers after hangbag thefts

NIGHTCLUB revellers are being urged to keep their bags in their hands at all times.

The call from police comes after at least two mobile phones were reported as being stolen at the weekend from people enjoying a night out in South Shields town centre.

Police say in many cases bags are being left unattended, proving to be too much of a temptation for a passing thief.

Neighbourhood Inspector John Smith said: “We need people to take care of their belongings when they are out by not leaving bags unattended.”

The advice comes as part of Northumbria Police’s Operation Soundwave, a campaign tackling opportunist thieves.
