A defiant shop boss has been left devastated after roof-top raiders smashed their way through his store and snatched a £20,000 haul of goods.

Burglars scaled the roof of Fairtech Computers, in the Denmark Centre, South Shields, and made their way inside through a skylight before stealing a large number of electronic items and phones.

It is very, very upsetting - this is my livelihood.

Shell-shocked owners ABM Shamim and wife Hosneara Begum were greeted by shards of broken glass covering the floor and broken cabinets and shelves from the ransacking when they opened up yesterday morning.

They believe the break-in took place overnight on Monday.

Mr Shamim, 45, who has run the store for four years, says he will also be left with a repair bill running into thousands.

But he insisted he would only close the store for one day – as he didn’t want the culprits to damage his livelihood any further.

Mr Shamim said: “It is very, very upsetting. This is my livelihood. They have taken about £15,000 to £20,000 of stock. Everything from tablets to iphones and ipads.

“They have shattered the glass cabinets and taken down shelves, and the damage they have caused will be another £15,000 to repair.”

He says police discovered blood at the crime scene – which could help to snare the raiders.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Offenders forced their way in via the roof from the rear of the shop and gained access through a skylight. They stole a large number of mobile phones and caused damage to the premises.”

Police are appealing for anyone with information to call 101, extension 69191, quoting log number 265 of 18/08/15 or ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
