A serial shop thief was hit with a hefty court bill after being caught on camera raiding a South Tyneside supermarket.
Stephen Mason was spotted on in-store CCTV snatching three packets of chicken fillets – valued at a total of £15 – from Iceland, in Chichester Road, South Shields, on Saturday, April 18.

Police were alerted and the 46-year-old was later arrested.
Mason, of Russell Avenue, South Shields, admitted a charge of shop theft when he appeared before South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court.
The court heard that Mason has 61 previous theft offences.
Neil Fodor, prosecuting, said: “This was an unsophisticated theft from a shop. Mason was seen on CCTV in the store. He had a carrier bag with him and was seen to select three packets of chicken and put them into the carrier bag before leaving without paying.
Christopher Brown, defending, said: “He has entered an immediate guilty plea to this offence.”
Mason was given an 18-month conditional discharge and must pay compensation of £15 as well as a £150 criminal court charge.
