A SOUTH Tyneside son is due to appear in court today charged with murdering his parents.

Martin Ruddy, 28, has been charged with two counts of murder and is due to appear at North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court.

Eric Ruddy, 64, and his 54-year-old wife Carol, died at their home in Bentinck Street, Elswick, Newcastle, on Friday.

Officers were called to a house in Bentinck Street, Elswick, shortly before 10.30pm on Friday night after a report from the ambulance service of three injured people.

A 64-year-old man and 54-year-old woman were taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, where they were later pronounced dead.

A 28-year-old man, who was also taken to hospital with less serious injuries, was arrested in connection with the incident.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Police have charged a man with two murders.

“This follows the deaths of a married couple, 64-year-old Eric and 56-year-old Carol Ruddy, who died at their home in Bentinck Street, Elswick on Friday, December 12.”

It is believed Mrs Ruddy was a disabled wheelchair-user and her husband, a former binman, was her carer.
