A pregnant thief has been hit with a £165 court bill – after snatching a drink worth just 59p from a South Tyneside store.

Charlene Reid was caught on camera stealing the bottle of Lucozade from B&M Bargains, in Jarrow, on Tuesday, May 26.

Keen-eyed staff then spotted her in a nearby store and brought her back to the premises, where she was detained until police arrived.

Reid admitted the theft at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Neil Fodor, prosecuting, said: “In interview with police she said she stole the drink as she was dehydrated and said she was seven months pregnant.”

Ian Haq, defending, said: “This is a very low-value theft.

“She was dehydrated and had no money and made the unfortunate decision to steal the drink.”

Reid, of Milford Road, Newcastle, was given a six-month conditional discharge by magistrates and must pay a criminal court charge of £150 as well as a victim surcharge of £15.
