A Sunderland man has appeared in court, accused of trying to kill his wife.

Laurence Crosby, 65, appeared before magistrates today charged with the attempted murder of wife Jean at their home in Westheath Avenue, Sunderland, on Saturday.

Crosby, who had a bandage on his left wrist, confirmed his name and address and that he understood the charge.

The court heard he had originally appeared on Bank Holiday Monday, when he had been remanded on bail to an address in Stannington Grove until a long-term bail address could be found.

The case was adjourned to Newcastle Crown Court on June 11 and Crosby was released on bail on condition he live at a guest house in Ocean Road, South Shields, does not contact prosecution witnesses and does not enter Sunderland except for pre-arranged appointments.
