POLICE have extended the bail of Sunderland and England footballer Adam Johnson.
The 27-year-old had been arrested on March 2 at his £1.8m mansion in Castle Eden on suspicion of sexual activity with a girl under 16.
We stress again the warning we have already given, that anyone who publishes anything which may identify the victim of a sexual offence is committing a criminal act and will be dealt with accordingly.Durham Constabulary spokesman
He is now due to report back to police at 10am on Thursday, April 23, while the police investigation continues and will not be required to attend a police station tomorrow.
Durham Constabulary has now reissued a warning to those using social media that identifying the alleged victim is a criminal offence.
The force also says that online ‘rumour and speculation’ has caused distress to those involved in the case.
A spokesman said: “Durham Constabulary is aware this investigation has resulted in considerable rumour and speculation, much of it on social media and in relation to the victim.
“This has caused distress to the (alleged) victim and her family and is very unhelpful while we still have a number of actions to carry out as part of our enquiries.
“We stress again the warning we have already given, that anyone who publishes anything which may identify the victim of a sexual offence is committing a criminal act and will be dealt with accordingly.
“At the time of the man’s arrest, media reports suggested a weapon had been recovered from the house. This has now been fully examined and confirmed to be an item which does not require a firearms certificate, therefore no further police action will follow.”
Adam Johnson has been suspended by Sunderland AFC pending the outcome of the investigation.
A statement issued by the club today said: “Following the decision by the police today, the club will be reviewing its position and will not make any further comment at the present time.”
Black Cats fans showed their support for the former Manchester City and Middlesbrough winger by singing “there’s only one Adam Johnson” during the opening minutes of Sunderland’s away game against Hull on March 3.
Sunderland-born Johnson, who has appeared for England, became a dad in January, with his partner Stacey Flounders, who is from Hartlepool, reported to be standing by him.
