A TEENAGER had to be taken to hospital after she was hit in the face by an egg thrown from a passing car.

The 17-year-old was struck by the egg as she walked along the Coast Road, South Shields, at 12.55am on Sunday.

It is understood that a man in the passing car threw the object at the girl and it cut into her face as it smashed.

She was taken to South Tyneside District Hospital in South Shields for treatment.

Acting Inspector Julie Beattie, of the East Shields, Cleadon and Boldon neighbourhood policing team, said: “Those responsible may have thought this was a bit of fun.

“However, the teenager suffered a cut to her face and had to be treated in hospital.

“We’re continuing to investigate the incident and would ask anyone with any information to contact us.”

Any witnesses to the incident can call police on 101 extension 69191.
