A drunken raider who snatched a bottle of wine from a South Tyneside supermarket has been spared jail – as he is trying to beat the booze.

Kevin Abdou was subject to a 16-week suspended jail term after being caught on CCTV stealing the £4.99 drink from the Co-op store, on Dean Road, South Shields.

When arrested, the 35-year-old said he couldn’t recall the theft, but said he would’ve been drunk.

Glenda Beck, prosecuting, said: “On April 16, he was seen putting the wine down his tracksuit trousers.”

Valerie Bell, defending, said: “He is making good, steady progress to reduce his alcohol consumption.”

Abdou, of Hill Park Road, Jarrow, admitted shop theft at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court and received a six-month conditional discharge.
