AN ‘EMBARRASSED’ shop thief’s crime was caught on camera – after he snatched cosmetics from a South Tyneside supermarket and tried to stash them in his child’s pushchair.

Marc Mackie was spotted on in-store footage grabbing nearly £15 worth of goods from the perfume aisle of Asda, in Coronation Street, South Shields, on Monday, March 2 before concealing them in the hood of the pushchair.

He was stopped by staff as he left the store and admitted the theft when police arrived.

The 25-year-old pleaded guilty to shop theft when he appeared before South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Rehana Haque, prosecuting, said; “A worker was monitoring CCTV and saw the defendant walking backwards and forwards in the perfume aisle.

“He concealed items in the hood of the pushchair.

“When he was stopped, he had only £5 on him. The goods were recovered.

“Police attended and he made full admissions.”

Valerie Bell, defending, said: “He is at a loss to explain why he did this.

“He is embarrassed about it.

“He was in a difficult place at the time and had been drinking to excess.

“He has now dealt with this on a voluntary basis and has been abstinent for eight weeks.

“He is in a better place now than he was at the time of the offence.”

Mackie, of no fixed abode, was hit with a £73 fine by magistrates and was ordered to pay court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £20 -–making for a total court bill of £178.
