POLICE officers are asking the public to help them catch the people who murdered a South Shields man at his own takeaway.
Tipu Sultan was shot in the back lane behind Herbs & Spice Kitchen in Lake Avenue, South Shields, just before 10pm last night.
The 32-year-old, who lived in Sunderland but was originally from Bangladesh, ran the family-owned takeaway.
Police and paramedics attended but the father-of-two was pronounced dead at the scene.
It is believed that two men on a motorbike were involved in the incident.
Witnesses report seeing two men wearing crash helmets and dressed in dark clothing on a motorbike drive into the rear lane in Lake Avenue just before the incident. They were then seen driving away from the area in the direction of Lizard Lane immediately after the shooting.
South Tyneside Superintendent Sav Patsalos said: “What we clearly need is to hear from anybody that’s got any information about the two men, the motorbike, or the weapon, or any other information they may hold.
“We are currently seeking to identify witnesses, looking at CCTV opportunities, forensic opportunities, and speaking to family and friends and other members of the community who knew Tipu and may be able to offer us some information.”
Anyone who was in the area around the takeaway and who might have any information that could help with enquiries is asked to contact police as soon as possible on 101 ext 69191 quoting reference number 1255 07/04/15.
Information can be passed anonymously by ringing Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
