'We will not tolerate violence in our communities' say police as South Tyneside men are jailed for affray

Police have praised the public for their support after three members of a gang were jailed for “an absolutely appalling incident” in which they pelted a rival group's cars with rocks and bottles.

An imitation firearm, machete and pool cue were also wielded by members of the first gang as they left a house in Arran Drive, Jarrow, to confront the occupants of the vehicles after receiving a tip off that they were en route.

With three defendants locked up at Newcastle Crown Court on Monday, November 23, and four more due to be sentenced early next year, a Northumbria Police detective has thanked the public for raising the alarm with 999 calls and said: “I hope this offers them reassurance that we will use every tactic at our disposal to ensure dangerous criminals are taken off our streets and put behind bars.”

Armed officers rushed to the scene after reports of cars careering into stationary vehicles at around 1.45pm on Saturday, June 6, before rocks and bottles were hurled.

The seven defendants were arrested at a nearby house and charged after security camera footage of the incident was obtained.

Detective Sergeant Aidan Hall, of Northumbria Police, said in a statement afterwards: “This was an absolutely appalling incident that would have terrified those living on the street and anybody who witnessed it unfold in broad daylight.

“A number of those involved were seen carrying weapons and showed levels of violence that has absolutely no place on our streets.

“Now, following a full and thorough investigation by a team of detectives, three of those involved have been handed jail terms while four others have been convicted and are awaiting sentence.

“We will not tolerate violence in our communities under any circumstances and these seven should be absolutely ashamed of their actions.

"I hope their conviction sends out a strong message to anybody who thinks about carrying a weapon and using violence.

“I would like to thank the community for their support and assistance throughout this investigation and I hope this offers them reassurance that we will use every tactic at our disposal to ensure dangerous criminals are taken off our streets and put behind bars.”

Three men were jailed at the crown court after admitting affray.

Four other defendants will be sentenced in early 2021. Conor Williams, 25, of Arran Drive, was imprisoned for 20 months after he also pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a machete and to unlawfully possessing a taser in a separate incident.

Dean Ratcliffe, 25, of Leslie Avenue, Hebburn, was jailed for 19 months after he additionally admitted possessing an imitation firearm and assault.

Kieran Lincoln, 26, of Olive Street, South Shields, was locked up for 14 months.

Judge Edward Bindloss, passing sentence, accepted that the defendants were under “scrutiny and threat” from the “other group of unknown protagonists”.

But he added: “No-one should take the law into their hands. You should not have armed yourselves.”

Further details about the case are expected to be revealed when four other men are sentenced by the same court in January after admitting affray at an earlier hearing.

They are Daniel Purvis, who is 30 on November 24, of Bishop Crescent, Jarrow, William Tisseman, 23, of Vespasian Avenue, South Shields, Cory Patterson, 25, of Emlyn Road, South Shields, and Shaun McCord, 34, of Abbey Drive, Jarrow.
