TWO women have been cautioned by police after a woman had her purse stolen in South Shields.

The theft happened at about 2.10pm yesterday at WHSmith in King Street, South Shields.

A woman put her purse in her bag, but as she did so it fell on the floor without her realising.

The women, who were stood behind her, then concealed the purse, before stealing it.

Officers carried out inquiries, including viewing CCTV, and the women responsible were identified and arrested.

The purse, and contents, were recovered and returned to the victim.

Both women, aged 21 and 41, accepted cautions for the theft.

South Shields Neighbourhood Inspector Peter Sutton, said: “Inquiries led the women responsible to be identified very quickly and subsequently arrested.

“The quick work also meant the purse, and its contents, could be returned to the owner before those responsible could conceal the property.”
