South Tyneside Council has made alterations to the kerb line at the entrance to Orchard Gardens in Whitburn, and widened the road on one side to help prevent damage by heavy vehicles mounting the kerb as they turn into the street. New timber posts will also be installed around the entrance way.

The works have been welcomed by the Whitburn and Marsden ward members, Councillors Peter Boyack, Tracey Dixon and Joyce Welsh.

Coun Dixon said: “There had been issues raised over the state of this grass verge. The land was all churned up creating an eyesore, which became worse after periods of bad weather, and there was damage to the kerb, caused by lorries, vans and cars mounting the pavement while making tight turns at this point.”
