A 49-year-old cyclist escaped with minor injuries after he was thrown into the air when he was knocked from his bike.
The collision happened this afternoon on Western Approach, South Shields, near the New George Street and Reed Street roundabout, and involved a Vauxhall car.
Witnesses and passing motorists, including two nurses, stopped to help the cyclist and kept him warm with blankets, while they also comforted the woman who had been driving the car.
Police and paramedics attended and the man was checked over and scene cleared.
A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: "At 1.43pm this afternoon, police were informed of a collision involving a car and a cyclist on Western Approach, when for reasons yet to be established the cyclist was knocked from his bike."
