Danger buildings could be bulldozed at former South Shields yard

The owners of McNulty’s Yard in Temple Town, South Shields, have applied to South Tyneside Council’s planning department for permission to demolish a number of buildings in a ‘dangerous state of repair’.

McNulty Offshore was plunged into administration in early 2012 after orders dried up.

But now Port of Tyne bosses, who acquired 10 acres of land at the yard, adjoining its Tyne Dock estate, from administrators in May 2012, have submitted plans to change the site.

They wish to demolish a two-storey steel frame structure, a brick pitched roof building, temporary cabins and a steel fabrication shed, plus other buildings.

The application said: “These buildings are in a dangerous state of repair and are considered to be structurally unsound.”

The plans state that once the buildings are razed, the land would be prepared for industrial redevelopment as part of Port of Tyne activities.

In April 2014, the council gave the green light for the port to carry out a £180million expansion.

This will see creation of a new wood pellet-handling and storage facility at Tyne Dock.

It will create 900 construction jobs and 300 full-time jobs when fully operational.

The extension, on land next to Tyne Logistics and IHC Engineering, would also incorporate 10.50m-high storage silos and two 46m-high rail-loading silos.

Planners will now consider the application and a decision will be made.
