The striker scored for the Under-23s in this afternoon's 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion.

The 33-year-old had suffered injury after making his first-team debut for the club in September's 2-0 EFL Cup win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

United manager Benitez watched Murphy played 45 minutes in the Premier League 2 fixture against West Brom.

Achraf Lazaar and Massadio Haidara also featured for Peter Beardsley's side at Whitley Park.

Murphy – who had a previous spell in the North East with Sunderland – headed a Lazaar cross home in the 41st minute before being withdrawn at the break.

West Brom levelled seven minutes from time through a Jack Fitzwater penalty after Callum Williams foul in the box.
