Date set for opening of new store in South Shields

The doors are almost set to open on a new store for South Shields town centre.

The transformation of the former Marks and Spencer’s store in King Street into a new-look Boyes Department store is nearing completion.

For months workers have been on site refurbishing the store ahead of its doors opening to the public on Friday September 7 .

The new store has created 25 part-time roles that have all been filled.

Marketing Director for Boyes. Robert Van der Heijden said: “Everything is going really well.

“The store has undergone a complete refurbishment, which is almost complete.

“We are all really excited. There has been a lot of work which has gone in to revamp the store from the old Marks and Spencers store.

“Hopefully, everyone will be pleasently surprised with the new store.”

An opening ceremony will take place on at 9am on Friday September 7 - with a ribbon cutting signalling the store being officially open to the public.

Throughout the day there will also be the chance to win a number of prizes.

Mr Van der Heijden added: “We always like to make our store openings into a celebration.”

W Boyes and Co Ltd, operate over 50 stores throughout Yorkshire, the North East, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire.

They sell a range of products from home and gardening equipment and furniture, cleaning products, health and beauty, clothing and footwear and pet supplies.

Marks and Spencer closed its doors for the final time on March 29, 2014 bringing an end to 80 years of trading on King Street.

It’s 37 staff were relocated to its outlet store in North Tyneside’s Silverlink retail park.
