Demolition plans to make way for new business complex in South Shields town centre
The wrecking ball may soon be coming down on two former businesses as part of a town's £100million regeneration plan.
An application has been submitted to South Tyneside Council for the demolition of numbers 3 to 7 Keppel Street in South Shields.
The site used to be home to a travel agent’s and a snooker club.
The plans, which havebeen submitted by Muse Developments and South Tyneside Council, will see a new building – known as 5 Keppel Street – being created.
It will be a three-storey building and used for retail, business and financial services.
The application stated: “This application proposes the development of a new A1/A2 and office development in the town centre.
“It is an important development in its own right, and beneficial for the town of South Shields.
“5 Keppel Street will provide a key location for businesses wanting presence in the newly regenerated South Shields town centre.
“More importantly, it compliments the statement of intent by South Tyneside Council in the continual regeneration of the town.
“The provision of 5 Keppel Street alongside the Interchange will begin the regeneration of the town centre and establish the principle objectives of the 365 Masterplan.”
This new build, if given approval, will be right next to the town’s future transport interchange – which is earmarked for the Post Office site.
