Council bosses say that work began on January 4 and is expected to be completed by the end of April.

The council also says that it is exploring the options for the redevelopment of the site.

The policing team from the old station was relocated to Hebburn Central in November, last year.

The hub, in the town’s Glen Street, is where residents can now go to seek advice and arrange a meeting with a police officer in one of the centre’s meeting rooms.

Chief Superintendent Andy McDyer, Southern Area Commander, said: “This relocation to Hebburn Central gives the public good access to our police front office facility.

“It’s a move which brings policing next to other well -used public facilities – this will make it easier for people to contact us.”

Hebburn Swimming Pool was closed when new facilities were built and opened at Hebburn Central, and the Civic Centre was closed a number of years ago.

A council spokesman said: “Work started on preparing the site for demolition on January 4 and it is due to be completed by the end of April. We are exploring the options for the redevelopment of the site.”
