Diplomat visits South Tyneside for Bangladeshi women's seminar
The Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh, His Excellency Mr Abu Nasar Md. Anowarul Islam, visited the Borough as part of a North of England Bangladeshi women’s seminar.
Mr Islam met with the Mayor of South Tyneside, councillor Ken Stephenson, and council leader Iain Malcom at South Shields Town Hall.

Hide AdThe Mayor said: “It was wonderful to meet His Excellency Mr Islam and welcome him to South Shields Town Hall.
“We have a diverse multi-cultural community here in South Tyneside and our Bangladeshi families make a hugely positive contribution to our cultural heritage.”
His visit was hoped to spark work to promote and strengthen links with ethnic communities.
During his visit, the Assistant High Commissioner visited the South Tyneside Citizens Advice Bureau, the only CAB in the region to have dedicated staff to support Bangladeshi people.

Hide AdHe also took time to speak to Bangladeshi women at Apna Ghar, an organisation offering outreach support and a range of activities and courses for minority ethnic women.
The day centre offers courses in areas such as conversation and health and social care, and provides lunch groups and leisure activities.
The Mayor added: “Through visits such as this we can help to promote cultural awareness and greater understanding and respect for our different cultures, while helping to build and maintain positive relationships within our communities.”
Mr Islam joined Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2003.
