A shopping trip to Newcastle turned into a visit to Wonderland for little Bethany Luther.
Unknown to the six-year-old, she was actually going to meet the promotions team from Disney On Ice who had a special gift for her.
Bethany, a huge Disney fan has been growing her hair for two years, so she can cut it and donate it to Little Princess Trust – a charity which makes wigs for children with cancer.
The caring youngster had been due to go to Disneyland Paris as a treat for the selfless act but the trip, booked through South Shields Day Trips, was cancelled – leaving her parents Catherine Wear and James Luther, along with other families, disappointed.
The firm is now the subject of a police probe.
Despite the setback, Bethany, of Collingwood Street, South Shields, is still going ahead with the cut on August 27 and has also raised £300 in sponsorship for the cause.
I feel very happy and excitedBethany Luther
Yesterday, thanks to Disney and White Hot Communications, Bethany was taken to Eldon Square for what she thought was a shopping trip.
But instead, she was taken to the Disney stand outside Debenhams, where she was greeted by promotions manager Dylon-Jade Bruce, who presented her with four tickets to see Disney On Ice Worlds of Enchantment show at Metro Radio Arena on October 6 – as well as a VIP invitation to be part of the show during the Little Mermaid set.
The youngster soon beamed with delight when she realised just what she was being presented with.
She said: “I feel very happy and excited. I thought I was going to be just looking around the shops. It was a big surprise. Thank you, mam and dad.”
Her parents had known about the surprise for the past week.
Mr Luther said: “I’m just over the moon for her. We hated every minute of telling her about the trip being cancelled as she had been looking forward to it since we told her.
“But this has made her so happy.”
Miss Wear said: “It has been so hard to keep it a secret for her. When I got the phone call to say all this had been arranged for her, I just cried.
“She was so understanding when we explained about the trip, but she still said she wanted to have her hair cut for the charity.
“She is such a caring little girl, and for her to be given this, it’s just really nice how that she has been recognised in this way and more than we could have ever imagined for her.
“We can’t thank everyone who has organised this enough.”
Miss Bruce said: “Bethany is a lovely little girl and it’s great what she is doing. It was really nice to present her with this gift.”
