Does today’s deluge herald a bitter autumn of brutal weather?

The sunny skies and warmer weather of the second summer have disappeared as bleak weather descended on the North East.

Drivers faced a nightmare on the roads today in hazardous conditions, with flooding and standing water causing a nightmare in place.

Heavy rain and possibly even thunder will continue to dog us today, with a chilly feel in coastal areas.

Tonight will see rain slowly clearing from the west, some clear spells developing, leading to a touch of ground frost by tomorrow morning.

Thursday should be mainly dry across the region with some good sunny spells and light winds, although more cloudy in the afternoon with isolated showers possible.

Fog and a touch of frost are forecast on Friday, though with sunny spells later in the day.

But Saturday and Sunday will be cloudier and breezier with a few showers possible.
