A dog owner was taken to hospital after trying to rescue their pet from a river.
Firefighters from South Shields and Hebburn were called to the River Don at Church Bank, Jarrow, at just after 1pm today.
A dog had swam out and got trapped on an island in the river.
His owner attempted to rescue the pet, but couldn’t reach them.
Firefighters used an inflatable boat to rescue the dog, which was unharmed in the incident.
The owner suffered small cuts and bruises and was taken to hospital.
