DOZENS of residents have objected to plans to turn an empty care home into houses.

Browns Letting Agency has applied to convert the former St Michael’s View nursing home in St Michael’s Avenue North, Westoe, South Shields, into eight houses of multiple occupation.

Each house would contain up to 11 bedrooms, with the development housing 65 tenants in total.

There are also proposals for a 27-space car park, cycle storage and caretaker’s flat.

More than 30 neighbours have objected to the plans, claiming it could cause parking problems and lead to “undesirable” tenants moving in.

Five neighbours have written to South Tyneside Council in support of the plans, saying the empty building is attracting antisocial behaviour and needs to be brought back into use.

Planners have recommended councillors approve the application. A meeting was due to take place at 10am today at the Town Hall to consider the plans and objections.
