THE first batches of houses on an East Shields estate have been modernised just in time for Christmas.
In total, 430 South Tyneside Homes properties in Cleadon Park are being revamped through the government’s Decent Homes programme
Work started last month and the first 43 homes have now been completed in time for the festive season.
Councillors Jim Foreman and Alex Donaldson, the ward’s Labour representatives, are delighted that work has finally started on their estate.
Coun Foreman said: “Both Alex and I are very pleased that work has finally started.
“People will be able to get the work carried out which they require and have been waiting for.
“I am delighted that already 43 of the homes are completely finished just in time for Christmas, and the rest will soon be following shortly.”
Works being carried out by the programme include new kitchens, bathrooms, rewiring and heating systems.
It’s hoped all of the work on the estate will be completed by mid next year.
The Decent Homes programme was launched to ensure all rented accommodation met a minimum standard of decency and have a degree of thermal comfort.
