Council bosses are thanking motorists for their patience while work to improve a busy South Tyneside roundabout continues.
Traffic is increasing around Jarrow’s Lindisfarne roundabout as the council works to widen roundabouts and most of the surrounding dual carriageway.
A Spokesman for South Tyneside Council said: “We’d like to thank motorists for their patience during the extensive works taking place to improve the junction at Lindisfarne.
“Over recent months we have tried to prepare people for this major highways scheme with letter drops in the immediate catchment area, articles in the Residents’ Newsletter which is distributed to every household, extensive coverage in the local and regional press, advanced warning signs on the carriageway and by using Variable Messaging Signs on approach.
“We have also been working closely with our colleagues at Tyne & Wear Urban Traffic Management and Control to ensure that real time traffic and travel information is delivered to motorists through social media.”
He added: “The roundabouts and Leam Lane will remain open for the majority of the works, with two lanes in operation during peak periods. Lanes will be narrowed. Outside peak periods motorists are advised to leave extra time for their journey or use an alternative route.
“The scheme involves widening both roundabouts and most of the dual carriageway from two to three lanes in both directions. It will also include flood alleviation works. It is anticipated that the scheme will be completed in summer 2017.
“Motorists are advised to follow NE Traffic News @NECATraffic for real time traffic and travel information.
“Motorists can also view live traffic cameras across the borough before setting off on their journey by visiting www.southtyneside.gov.uk/transport and scrolling down to traffic cameras in South Tyneside. “
