Gayle reached the milestone in this afternoon's game against Brentford at Griffin Park.

But the striker limped out of the Championship fixture soon after signalling to the bench that he was struggling.

Gayle opened the scoring in the 19th minute at Griffin Park with a fine left-footed strike.

And the 27-year-old became the first player in more than a decade to reach the 20-goal milestone.

Gayle, however, was soon down injured.

United manager Rafa Benitez quickly replaced him with Daryl Murphy, who scored in last weekend's FA Cup tie against Birmingham City.

Newcastle lost Aleksandar Mitrovic to a badly gashed leg at St Andrew's.

Benitez hopes Mitrovic will be back next month.
