Eddie Howe reveals a big 'if' about Newcastle at St James's Park

Howe's side took a huge stride towards Premier League safety on Tuesday night when they beat Southampton at the Vitality Stadium.

Newcastle, meanwhile, took another step backwards 24 hours later at the Britannia Stadium.

A goal from Xherdan Shaqiri condemned the 19th-placed club to a sixth successive away defeat in the league.

And head coach Steve McClaren's job is on the line ahead of tomorrow's game at St James's Park.

United, however, have been better at home than on their travels this season, and Bournemouth manager Howe is wary of McClaren's struggling team.

“If Newcastle get their game right, then it will be a tough test, but vice versa, we can be very difficult to beat," said Howe, whose side were beaten 1-0 by Newcastle at the Vitality Stadium in November.

“We certainly don’t underestimate the size of the task ahead, but it’s also one that we can look forward to.

“We need to take care of our own business. There’s going to a red-hot atmosphere on Saturday. It’s another big game."

Bournemouth are 15th in the league and eight points ahead of United.
