Inspectors praise school’s improvements and ‘excellent drive’

STAFF and pupils at a South Shields primary school have been given the thumbs-up by an education watchdog.

Forest View Primary in Whiteleas has been rated as good by the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted).

In a report compiled after their visit to the Rembrandt Avenue school in March, inspectors praised the “excellent drive and vision” of headteacher Cheryl Ward.

They described the behaviour of its 298 pupils at times as exemplary, both in the classroom and in social settings.

A previous Ofsted report, following an inspection in 2013, had rated the school as requiring improvement.

Pleased

Mrs Ward said: “I am really pleased with the findings of our Ofsted inspection.

“It is a testament to all the hard work of everyone involved with the school – governors, staff parents and our wonderful children.”

Coun Bill Brady, chairman of governors at the school, said: “We are overjoyed at the result of the Ofsted inspection.

“This is the result of four years of hard work by every member of staff, the governors and the children to achieve this standard.

“This school is now good, but we expect to achieve outstanding status at our next inspection.”

To achieve that higher rating, the school will need to help its pupils reach higher academic standards, especially in maths.

Teachers have also been told to raise their expectations of what their youngsters can achieve to ensure that they make better progress.
