EIGHT people have been taken to hospital after a crash in the Tyne Tunnel.
Police were called to the busy river crossing to two vehicles which had collided.
The smash happened at 12.05pm, today, in the southbound tunnel, causing tailbacks in both directions.
The southbound side of the Tunnel was closed temporarily and traffic diverted from the area. This is now fully open and diverted traffic is now being allowed back to the area. The northbound side of the tunnel remained open throughout the incident.
However, there is still congestion in the area.
One woman was taken to South Tyneside General Hospital for treatment to injuries, not believed to be life threatening. Several others were taken to North Tyneside Hospital as a precaution.
