Police were called shortly before 11pm on Monday, January 18, to reports of a woman at South Shields pier who was discovered on the wrong side of the railings.

The South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade (SSVLB) and Sunderland Coastguard were called However, both were stood down.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At about 10.55pm on Monday we received a report of concern for a female at South Shields pier.

“Officers attended the scene and found a woman on the wrong side of the railings.

A SSVLB spokesperson added: “The team were tasked with our colleagues from Sunderland CRT to the pier in South Shields after a report of a despondent female.

“We were stood down en route as the incident had been resolved by police.”
