SOUTH Tyneside actress Emilie Fleming has landed a leading role in her dream West End show.

The 23-year-old has been cast as Cosette in Les Misérables.

She’ll take on the role at the Queen’s Theatre, in London, from June 16.

She said: “It’s incredible and the rehearsals are amazing. I can’t wait for the show to start.

“The auditions were so terrifying. You’re in a room full of people who are going for the same role and you think there’s no chance you’re going to get it, and then when you do, it’s just the most incredible feeling.

“I just hope I do a good job. It’s my absolute dream show, and playing Cosette is just a huge bonus.

“I wanted to be in Les Mis so much that I didn’t care what role I got, and I can’t believe I get to play Cosette – it’s amazing.”

The former St Joseph’s Catholic Academy pupil, of Boldon, has been dreaming of a career on the stage for years.

In 2010, she reached the live finals of BBC talent contest Over The Rainbow, which saw Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber searching for a Dorothy for his production of The Wizard of Oz.

Emilie, a graduate of Guilford School of Acting, also recently starred as Charlotte Sowerberry in a professional production of Oliver! at the Crucible Theatre, in Sheffield.

Les Misérables is based on the novel of the same name by French poet and novelist Victor Hugo.

Set in the early 19th century, it is the story of French peasant Jean Valjean and his quest for redemption after serving 19 years in jail for stealing a loaf of bread for his starving sister’s child.

Valjean breaks his parole and starts a new life, but he is relentlessly tracked down by a police inspector, named Javert.

Emilie added: “Everything is still so new and fresh for me and it’s so exciting. The cast is amazing and everyone is great to work with.

“I’m doing the show for a year so I’m sure all my friends and family will be coming down to see it at some point.

“I know I’ll be terrified the first day I step out onto the stage, but I can’t wait.”
