Emma Lewell-Buck says she is "stepping down" from her role as Shadow Minister for Communities and Local Government as the Labour Party leadership battle continues.

The South Shields MP was appointed to the role back in January but this morning took to Twitter to say: "Today I'm stepping down as Shadow Minister heartbroken at state of Party & recent events so sorry things have came to this, statement later."

The move comes as something of a surprise as, earlier this week, a spokesman for the MP told the Gazette she would "categorically not be resigning."
