HUMBLED Drew Gerrard has told of his delight after receiving a string of nominations for the What’s On Where awards.
The Sunderland-born solo singer and entertainer, who is represented by the Jarrow-based Mel Unsworth agency, is one of the first nominations for this year’s contest.
His fans sent in a string of entries for him, describing Drew as “breathing life into anything he does” and “the loveliest person I have ever met.”
Drew, whose real name is Andrew Gerrard Thompson, said: “I am really touched. I feel honoured and humbled.”
Drew - who describes his age as “39 for the stage and 44 really - although I look 27”, hails originally from Ashbrooke in Sunderland and went to St Aidan’s Catholic Academy before leaving in 1986 to join the Royal Air Force.
He worked as a general technician (electrical) until he became an overseas entertainer with Thomson Holiday in 2000. He said: “I have always been into singing and telling jokes.”
He married his wife Emma, 39, who works as a local authority administrative assistant in 2005, and has an eight-year-old son Matthew and a 16-year-old stepdaughter Lauryn.
Drew now lives in Peterlee which is where Emma comes from and sings on the North East scene. He said: “I just love that.”
So do his fans. One nomination for him said: “There’s nothing he will not do for a laugh, more often than not at his own expense.”
Another commented: “He has a huge heart of gold. He is one in a million and anyone would be honoured to watch this man perform.”
Drew is also known for his charity work. He performs for charities free of charge and has helped raise money for the Bradley Lowery appeal, Macmillan, and Newton Aycliffe Royal British Legion.
The awards are held in association with our weekly entertainments guide, Wow 24/7, and aim to reward the elite in everything from restaurants to children’s venues, takeaways to parks and community areas, and hotels to the best shopping experience.
We are off to a great start in our awards but we want more nominations. Send in your entries and put your favourites in the running.
And if there’s more than one cause that you love, put them all in the running and make the judges job really hard.
