3,000 green jobs could be created in low-carbon boom to help drive South Tyneside out of pandemic gloom, experts say

The Green New Deal UK non-profit organisation report has found that 1.2 million jobs could be created across the UK through the proposed green stimulus plan, with that figure rising to nearly three million over the coming decade.

According to the study, a total of 1,318 green jobs could be created in South Shields within two years, with as many as 3,511 over the coming decade.

Meanwhile, Jarrow could see 1,556 employment opportunities in the next two years and 3,848 in a decade.

A new operations hub for the Dogger Bank Wind Farm proposed at the Port of Tyne is one of the projects already planned which will be a green jobs boost for the area.

Challenging the notion of what constitutes a ‘green job’, the report argues that environmental breakdown and the pandemic have underlined the need to expand and overhaul social care.

The Government has promised reform of the sector, but is yet to set out its plans.

Further employment, the report finds, could also be created in digital infrastructure, research and development and renewable energy, among other areas.

Labour has responded to environmental campaigners with a green job creation commitment of its own.

Jarrow MP Kate Osborne told The Gazette that such measures would ‘finally do something right by the people of this area’.

“It is urgent that we act on the ever growing climate crisis,” she said.

"This government has promised repeatedly a green recovery but we are still yet to see any meaningful action take place.

"The Green New Deal UK projects a possible over 1,500 green new jobs in the Jarrow constituency and I welcome Labour’s recent announcement that 400,000 Green jobs will be created as part of the £30billion plan to revive the UK’s vital manufacturing industries.

"It would be great if this government could act and finally do something right by the people of this area.”

Ms Osborne’s comments were echoed by South Shields MP, Emma Lewell-Buck, who stressed the importance of low-carbon job creation for young people.

She said: “With the estimated total jobs lost to covid-19 being 1.9million, it is essential that the Government step in and create jobs that better our future.
