An angry councillor is kicking up a stink over bags of dog mess being dumped at a South Tyneside beauty spot.

Coun Jeff Milburn is disgusted by the number of plastic bags containing dog waste being left on Cleadon Hills.

The Cleadon and East Boldon Tory has contacted South Tyneside Council to ask for extra dog wardens to patrol the area to try to stop the culprits.

He said: “It’s getting beyond a joke now, it’s not just the odd bag – there’s a number of them being left in piles.

“You often dog walkers arriving with an army of dogs. I believe they’re the ones leaving the mess behind.

“The average dog walker and their pet isn’t going to create this much waste, it’s disgusting.

“It just takes one person to be irresponsible like this and it ruins it for everyone.

“Children play here, why should they have to accidentally run or fall into a pile of muck like this? It’s not fair.”

Coun Tracey Dixon, lead member for area management and community safety, said: “We take dog fouling very seriously. It is not only unpleasant and unsightly but can be a real health hazard.

“We would like to remind dog owners and walkers that failing to clear up is a criminal offence. We know that the majority of dog owners and walkers are responsible.

“However there is a small minority who think the law does not apply to them and this will not be tolerated.

“Owners are encouraged to use their own waste bins to dispose of the used bags or put in one of the council’s litter bins.”
