AN ex-serviceman who has helped raise more than £21,000 in support of our fighting forces has passed on his gratitude to the people of Hebburn.
John Houston, who formerly served with the Royal Green Jackets in Northern Ireland and Cyprus, recently completed another successful year of fundraising for the Help the Heroes charity.
A total of £6,277 was raised in 2014 for the cause, and a cheque was presented to Alan Saddler, a representative for the charity, at the Iona Social Club in Hebburn.
Mr Houston started raising funds in 2010 and to date has added £21,134 to the charity’s coffers.
The cash has been collected through donations in Hebburn and from raffles, domino cards and social evenings.
Mr Houston said: “I was drawn to the charity after seeing wounded service personnel returning from active service.
“These personnel have suffered both physically and mentally, and many will require long-term support.
“It’s a charity which will always be close to my heart.
“I would like to thank everyone who has supported the charity within the Iona club and the residents of Campbell Court in Hebburn, who held a social evening and raised £434.”
