Advocaat stepped down as Black Cats manager in October after the 2-2 draw with West Ham United claiming the Sunderland squad was not good enough to stay up this season.

Sam Allardyce took charge at the Stadium of Light, with the 68-year-old Dutchman returning to his homeland to spend more time with his family.

But Advocaat is now back in football with Dutch giants Feyenoord as an advisor, where he will work unpaid until the end of the season.

Feyenoord are currently struggling having lost their last seven Eredivisie games under Van Bronckhorst, who played for Advocaat at Rangers from 1998 to 2001 at Feyenoord from 2002-04 and for the Netherlands.

The pair have now been reunited.

Advocaat told the Dutch press that he was positive about the offer when first approached by the club's technical director Martin van Geel.

He added: "That feeling has only grown after several conversations. I do this mainly because I have a relationship with Giovanni."

Van Bronckhorst, capped 106 times by Holland, retired from football in 2010 when he became Holland’s assistant manager and Under-21 coach.
