Excellent care by staff

In total contrast to the report that South Tyneside General Hospital (STGH) provides the worst stroke care in the country, my mother was given the best care each time when she suffered her strokes, the third of which was fatal.

On arrival in the ambulance, which quickly responded on the first two occasions when she was at home to my 999 calls, the third was last year when she was in Westoe Grange Care Home, she was immediately taken to A&E, the Paramedics having carried out the preliminary assessment, and from there admitted to the Stroke Unit in Ward 8, via the Acute Care Unit.

From the moment she was taken there to the days when she was discharged, my mam was well looked after by the specialist team of doctors, dedicated nurses and physiotherapists.

The ward manager arranged a personal social worker, who went beyond the call of duty to find her a place in the care home, to be allocated to her along with members of the mental health and crisis teams.

The physios continued my mam’s rehabilitation after her discharge.

Even though my mam didn’t regain consciousness in the days after her third stroke, she was made as comfortable as possible by the staff ,who kept me informed until she finally passed away.

I have nothing but praise for all of them.
