Extra bus and Metro services for Sunderland Airshow
There will be extra Metro and bus services running this weekend for people visiting Sunderland International Airshow.
The airshow, which takes place on Friday 27, Saturday, 28 and Sunday 29, July on Sunderland seafront attracts large crowds from across the North East and beyond.
Tyne and Wear Metro will be running extra services to and from the airshow this weekend and passengers are advised to allow extra time to make their journey as trains and stations are expected to be busy.
Passengers are advised to alight at Seaburn, which is the nearest Metro station to the seafront.
Metro Services Director, Chris Carson, said: “Sunderland International Airshow is one of the region’s biggest events and is one of our busiest weekends of the year as thousands of people from across the region travel to Roker and Seaburn seafront.
"We expect services to be busy over the weekend, particularly at Seaburn station, with queues following the event. Extra Metros will be running, but I advise passengers to please leave plenty of time for their journey to and from the airshow.
"We’ll have extra staff on hand to assist passengers over the weekend and we’re encouraging people travelling to the event to buy a Day Ticket or use a Pop Pay As You Go card to help make their journeys as quick and efficient as possible.”
Those travelling to the airshow can buy a Day Ticket from any Metro station ticket machine for £3 to £5.10 depending on which station they board, or a £1.30 ticket for children 16 and under. The tickets can be used all day allowing passengers to avoid queuing at a Metro ticket machine on their journey home.
Bus operator Stagecoach will be running an express direct service to the airshow on Saturday and Sunday, providing a direct link between Sunderland City Centre and the seafront.
The 510 service, which stops at Fawcett Street, Wheatsheaf, Stadium of Light Metro, Seaburn Metro and the Airshow, will run every few minutes between 10am and 6pm.
To enable the event to be held safely, a number of roads in the area will be closed to all traffic from 27 to 29 July during set up and the event itself, and a number of temporary bus routes implemented.
