The train will call at York at 1.31am, Darlington at 2.09am, Durham at 2.27am and arrive into Newcastle at 2.57am.

Emma Vincent, general manager for Virgin Trains on its east coast route, said: “We’re delighted to have been able to arrange, at short notice, an additional later train from London King’s Cross at 11.17pm, which will allow those wanting to travel to the game by train to get back home after the match.

“It’s very much a one-off at this stage, but if it proves popular, subject to the practicalities, we would certainly consider looking at similar options for games later on in the season.

“Fans wanting to travel to the match and return on the extra train are urged to book earlier via our website: www.virgintrainseastcoast.com.”
