Family hails '˜amazing generosity' as mobility scooter is donated to terminally-ill Jarrow man

Christopher Perry, 37, of Wuppertal Court, Jarrow, was left devastated when his mobility scooter was stolen by thieves.

However, a member of the public has now come forward to donate a new scooter to Christopher, allowing him to maintain his independence.

The original scooter had also been donated to him after a fundraising campaign.

Christopher’s wife, Lisa, said: “The story was shared so much, and someone got in contact with one of our friends to say they had one Christopher could use.

“It’s amazing how generous people can be.

“It’s so great that the story seemed to touch so many and humbling that someone was willing to help us out like that.

“The story was shared so much, and there were people engaging with it from as far away as Tokyo.

“We’re just so happy that Christopher can use a mobility scooter again.

“He has been out on it and feels much better now.”

Police are investigating after the first scooter – along with its charger – were stolen from Christopher’s shed while he and Lisa were visiting family in Manchester over the weekend of October 15 and 16.

Mr and Mrs Perry live with Christopher’s mum and dad, Pat and Jimmy.

Jimmy is also battling cancer, while Christopher is undergoing chemotherapy as doctors try to prolong his life.

Lisa added: “He feels a whole lot better now he has his independence back.

“It’s a big relief for me as well as I know that if he wants to go out with his dad, he can, and he’s not quite as confined to the house.

“It means he has some transport when I’m not at home, and gives him a bit more freedom.”
