Newcastle United’s special shirt to be worn in cup competitions has been given short shrift by fans online.

Puma’s American website is advertising a “replica cup jersey”, priced $90 (£57).

“Well they will only wear it twice!”

The navy blue shirt has a pink and white sash.

And Puma’s website says: “Big Newcastle fan? Always gotta have the latest and greatest gear?

“Introducing your next must-have: the new cup jersey.

“Show your Newcastle pride by wearing it, framing it, keeping it under your pillow... We won’t judge.”

The club’s perceived lack of commitment to cup competitions has been a major cause of fans’ increasing disillusionment with Mike Ashley’s regime in recent years.

The Magpies have made it past the fourth round of either domestic cup competition just once since the Sports Direct boss took over in May 2007, losing 4-0 to Spurs in the quarter final of the League Cup last season.

Ashley has made no secret of the fact he regards retaining the club’s top-flight status as the number one priority.

But with fans growing increasingly restless, reports coming out of St James’s Park suggest a more gung-ho approach to the cups next season.

News of the new-look shirt received a less than rapturous welcome from fans posting on the Gazette’s Facebook page.

Gary Atkinson said: “Well they will only wear it twice! Lol”, while Phil Brown commented: “ReplicaCup....says it all !”

Phillip Bewick said: “Won’t b wearing that very often then !!” and Karl Miller was keeping his money safe for now: “Buy 1 if get to final lol,” he wrote.
