Find out where South Shields' Post Office is to be located
The location of South Shields' new Post Office has been revealed following months of speculation.
Post Office chiefs have finally revealed where the new branch’s home would be once the Keppel Street site is demolished as part of the town’s £100m 365 Regeneration Plan.
In February, the Gazette revealed work had started on the former Officers Club at 8 King Street - but Post Office bosses were unable to confirm if this was to be the new venue.
However, bosses have now revealed that the plan is indeed to shift to the former clothes shop, which was also the music store HMV, and a consultation, until May 5, has been launched to gather views from customers.
A planning application has also been submitted to South Tyneside Council for permission to install new advertisement signs.
A Post Office Spokesman said: “The Post Office plans to move its South Shields branch to King Street as the town centre’s redevelopment means that its current premises will no longer be available. The branch, currently in Keppel Street, is planned to relocate around 175 metres away at 8 King Street, South Shields, previously trading as Officers Club.
“The new branch will be a modern, open-plan layout with six serving positions and the same wide range of services available. There will also be two self-service kiosks.
“The Post Office has started a six-week public consultation, until May 5, 2017.”
In September plans were approved for the Royal Mail Delivery Office, which is next door to the current Post Office – but has been a separate business since 2012 – to be relocated to West Walpole Street on the Rekendyke Industrial Estate. This is to make way for the town’s new future transport interchange.
