Firefighters were called to the Customs House in South Shields last night after a fire broke out during a Murder Mystery event.

Two engines from South Shields fire station and one appliance from Hebburn arrived at the theater on Mill Dam in the town at 9pm after reports of a small fire in a light fitting.

Prior to the arrival of crews, staff at the Customs House managed to extinguish the fire and had evacuated guests who were sat eating a meal in the restaurant at the time.

South Shields watch manager Eddie Cooper said: "We were called to the Customs House at 9pm last night after one of the light fittings in the dining room had caught fire during a Murder Mystery evening.

"Staff extinguished the blaze prior to our arrival and we then isolated the electricity supply.

"Crews then left the scene around 20 minutes later."

No one was injured in the incident.
