Firefighters called in to bring down sign from Customs House

A sign has been removed from the side of the Customs House arts venue due to the bad weather.

A crew of firefighters were called to the Mill Dam building at 8.10pm today after the large metal sign took a battering in the wind and rain.

The officers from South Shields Fire Station spent half an hour removing the display using a ladder and a crowbar.

Police in the region have also warned about large areas of standing water on the roads and have asked drivers to take care.

Motorists have been told they should drive slowly through the water, stay in first gear and keep revs up, stay on the crown of the road and dry brakes by using them gently once out of the water.
